SOFTBALL

• The Clover High School Blue Eagles defeated the Summerville High School Green Wave 2-1 in the 2015 Class AAAA Softball State Championship series.
• In the decisive Game 3, played at the University of South Carolina's Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field, Hannah Curtis hit a 2-run double in the fourth inning to give the Blue Eagles a 2-0 lead, which they eventually extended to 3-0 in the same inning. Summerville scored one run in the sixth, but Clover held on for the 3-1 victory and the program's first state championship.
• The Blue Eagles finished the 2015 season with a 23-11 record. Coach Shea Hall was later named the 2015 SC Softball Coach of the Year by the National Federation of High Schools.

BASKETBALL, BASEBALL

• 1970 Clover HS graduate
• basketball standout and school's all-time leading scorer from 1970-1993
• Team MVP and Conference MVP in 1970
• led the Blue Eagles to the 1970 AA State Finals scoring 17 points in a loss to Bamberg-Ehrhardt
• played baseball for 3 years, was a member of the Block C club, Pep Club, and was yearbook editor his senior year
• attended Clemson University and began working in the athletic department
• Clemson: served as student employee, assistant ticket manager, ticket manager, game day operations manager, and game day parking manager, promoted to Assistant Athletic Director in 1985 and in 1990 was named Associate Athletic Director, held title of Associate Athletic Director for Event Security from 2003 until retiring in 2015.
• continues to work game days at Clemson as a consultant
• 51 total years working in the Clemson Athletic Department

SHERER GORDON HOPKINS

• a 1991 Clover High School graduate, excelled in volleyball, softball, and basketball during her athletic career, and later achieved success as a basketball coach at Clover High School.
• In 2024, she was inducted into the York County Sports Hall of Fame.

High school career

• Hopkins earned multiple accolades during her time at Clover High School: All-Region Honors: Twice in volleyball, once in softball, and twice in basketball. North/South All-Star: Selected for volleyball.

All-State: Earned recognition in both basketball and softball.

W.H. Bowman Award: Recognized as the most outstanding female athlete in the Class of 1991.

• Collegiate career - Hopkins went on to play basketball at Francis Marion University where she achieved a significant milestone, becoming one of only four players in program history to record at least 1,000 points, 400 rebounds, and 300 assists in her career.

Coaching career: Hopkins returned to Clover High School to coach the women's basketball team, where she built the program from the ground up.

• Her coaching achievements include:

Region Championships: 10

Region Coach of the Year Awards: 9

Upper State Championships: 2

State Championship: 1 (in 2021)

• She retired with an impressive coaching record of 346-172. Hopkins became the winningest coach in program history and is credited with winning the program's only state championship

RONNIE MCGILL

• 2003 Clover HS graduate
• played safety, running back, quarterback, and linebacker
• during his senior year, rushed for 1827 yards and scored 29 TDs for the 8-4 Blue Eagles
• helped team to first region championship in 26 years
• over 4 years had 350 tackles on defense
• North/South All-Star won was selected a game MVP after rushing for 119 yards and 3 TDs
• played football at the University of North Carolina where he was a 4 year starter, rushed for 2393 yards, and 24 touchdowns
• his 244 yard performance against Wake Forest in 2003 is the 3rd highest total in school history
• began working in the NFL in 2009 with the Tennessee Titans and was a pro scout for the New England Patriots between 2012-2020 which included 3 Super Bowl victories
• began working with the Houston Texans in 2021 and the Texans named him Director of Pro Personnel in June of 2022.

• worked in Clover School District for 42 years
• coached football, basketball, and baseball at Clover High School
• worked in PE department at Clover Middle
• influential community member - 22 year town councilman

ERIN WRIGHT PIERSON

• 2002 CHS Graduate
• 4 time letter winner in both volleyball and basketball
• all-region VB for 3 seasons, Region Player of the Year VB in 2001 and 2002, North/South All-Star game selection in VB
• team won 74 and lost only 14 matches during VB career
• part of 2 region championship teams and 1 upper state championship team in basketball
• averaged 15pts and 8 rebounds per fames over 4 years
• 4 time all-region selection scoring 1704 points playing for Lady Blue Eagle team that was 85-22
• at end of her senior year, Erin won the DH Bowman Award for most outstanding female athlete, was voted most outstanding senior by the faculty, and also received the US Marine Corps Distinguished athlete award
• Erin attended Presbyterian College where she played basketball for the Lady Blue Hose

BENNIE BENNETT

• East Clarendon High School graduate
• played on Winthrop University's first men's team
• one of the most prolific scorer's in Winthrop history
• 15 year coaching career that included head coaching stops at Fort Mill HS (1987-1989) and Clover HS (1989-1998).
• 10 playoff appearances, 5 region championships, named region coach of the year 5 times
• worked in Clover Schools as an assistant principal, principal, athletic director, and assistant superintendent
• served as superintendent of Newberry County Schools for 10 years
• 2009 SC Athletic Administrators Association Superintendent of the Year
• served on the executive committee of the SCHSL from 2003-2014
• member of the Winthrop University and York County Athletic Hall of Fame

• began teaching and coaching in Clover in 1981 and spent entire 32 year career at CHS
• coached golf, tennis, volleyball, basketball, and softball
• served as Assistant Athletic Director
• as a basketball coach was named conference coach of the year 5 times, had an overall record of 102-44, won 3 tournament championships, and made the playoffs 6 straight seasons
• as softball coach for 19 seasons her teams won 7 conference championships, she was named conference coach of the year 7 times, won 2 district championships, and 2 upper state championships
• 239-123 overall record (softball)

• 1953 Shrine Bowl participant (first athlete to play both offense and defense in the Shrine Bowl)
• active Clover community member - member of Clover Jaycees, The Optimist Club, and The Alpine Lodge
• served as youth football official in Clover and as a high school official in North Carolina

CHRISTOPHER "POKE" COBB

• Football player at Clover High School from 1973 to 1976
• two-time all-conference selection
• Cobb was the 1976 team MVP and Shrine Bowl MVP.
• Rushed for 3,700-plus yards in three years of varsity play
• Record-breaking career at Eastern Illinois University, where he rushed for 5,042 career yards, amassed 6,077 all-purpose yards and scored 48 touchdowns.
• Twenty- seven 100-yard rushing games.
• Became the fifth highest rusher in NCAA history
• 2 time All-American
• led Eastern Illinois to the 1978 Division 2 national championship.
• He was inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame in 1978.
